A friend hears the song
in my heart and sings it to me
when my memory fails.

More than Graffiti - the Great Wall of LA

Graffiti was beginning to cover this wall behind the San Fernando Valley wash, and story goes that a group of LA Social, Art and City Planners, led by designer Judith Baca, conceived a better destiny for this space and for these budding artists.

Over 400 community youth participated in the creation of this wall, between the '70s & '80s, which can be found on Coldwater Canyon Ave in Valley Glen. The Wall runs about 1/2 mile between Oxnard and Burbank Blvd.

The history of California is well-documented in these paintings from pre-historic times to the 1980's, including scenes from the Gold Rush, the Spanish Conquest, both World Wars, the Citrus Industry, Indian Assimilation, Japanese Interment, Dust Bowl Refugees, the Birth of Rock and Roll, Jewish Arts and Sciences and women's roles of these times. Here's just a few of the paintings.

A day at the Park..
Balboa Park in Sunny Cali

What a glorious day in S. California!

What's a day in the park without a dog show?

Not sure their name, but beauty to the eye.

Not sure I ever saw the American Coot before.

Check out his feet - most unusual.

The following is a tutorial I thought you'd enjoy - I did!

That's all folks!

So, where are you Ellen?

Degeneres, that is!

Degeneres,_Ellen

Oh, what a show I could produce for you.

Well... yes, I've visited your website,

... emailed you to let you know I'm here in town,

...explained why you should purchase my latest book, Ruby Rose Comes to Town for your upcoming Mother's Day audience,

... told my long-time friend Master Silk Painter, Christine Sutherland, to complete the hidden talent search, because I'm guessing that you would have a complete blast learning from her how to paint on silk live on your show - yes, plan on getting a little messy.

... I would even love to introduce my storytelling buddy David Bullock, aka Hardrock to you. David reigns from Park City Utah & often shares his... almost believable mining stories that he learned from working in the mines with his father from age 4 - highly entertaining.

In fact, I could put together a whole storytelling show for you, complete with brilliant youth storytellers who would make you laugh, maybe cry, but always warm your heart.

And of course there's me - why not interview a 38 year long vegetarian & 18 year long vegan author? (by the way, that's 38 years total, not counting an occasional chocolate chip cookie or honey in my tea)

Well, let me know & always, thank you for bringing a little heaven to earth.

Melting Pot or What?...

Here in the California, we have quite the diversity.

I visited an Asian store:

New Year decorations

Humongous breadfruit - you can't tell in this pic, but take my word!

Peach & Cherrry blossom trees

Banana fruit o'natural

Eggplant galore!

And so much green food, you'd never get tired of trying something new!

Then to the Kosher Store...

What's Friday night without challah?

I'm guessing this is for Shabbat or Friday night prayers

Who doesn't need an extra yamulke?

Gefilte Fish, one of life's staples

I just thought this sign was interesting

... and these ice cream bars.

And, I'm guessing this is a Russian brand - loved the illustrations.

and still more.

Never to forget our need for Bazooka Joe gum!

As you can tell, I've enjoyed playing the tourist in town.
Nice to see so many different cultures getting along & sharing a common space.
